Kearney Nebraska Sports

Chadron State College's football team is scheduled to play a home-and-home series against the University of Nebraska-Omaha (UNK) for the first time since 2011. Kick-off is at 7.30pm on Saturday, September 2 at US Bank Stadium in Omaha. The national series, which was played annually from 1960-1980 and 1996-2011, was renewed for the second consecutive year after UNk left the Rocky Mountain Athletics Conference to join the American Intercollegiate Athletic Association (AIAA) and the National Football League (NFL).

After the national anthem and a short speech, a student demonstration and parade led the fans into the stadium. Zip Club led the crowd onto the field as Coach Klein introduced the captains of Kearney Bethany's football team.

We have sent out personal letters inviting professors, administrators and alumni to the event in the hope of building relationships with the campus community. As a program for young, aspiring trainers, we ask you to help us identify the strengths and weaknesses of our program.

The following year, NWCA president Mike Moyer asked if I would consider being a mentor for the program. I was in the right place at the right time and the chance to lead the sports department of UNK became a reality. Although I wasn't fully committed to coaching, I had the opportunity to coach my younger brother Joshua, and I enjoyed working with the kids and was committed enough to coach Joseph's middle school team for two years.

Chancellor Kristensen is looking for someone who can restore the position of sports director to a position of loyalty and openness and who is consistently committed to balancing the needs of students - athletes with practical situations and resources. NGF helped Preston Hall's family after he was critically injured in a car accident, but we came to his family at a time when they least expected it. And yet we had no choice but to help them with the financial challenges they faced. It took a team of people willing to invest time and resources to ensure that our students and athletes received the best possible care and support for their health and safety.

I am blessed to have an organization, the Nebraska Greats Foundation, that supports current and former college athletes from Nebraska. As we continue to spread the amazing deeds of NGF, we will also be the best way to identify former Lopers who need help with medical issues. We will identify them as soon as possible in the coming weeks and months.
